Lonely Zebra

This week’s Featured Friday Photo is a lonely zebra roaming the semi-arid plains in Amboseli National Park in Kenya.
Amboseli National Park is famous for its elephants, but it is home to many different animals. Zebras aren’t usually seen alone, but this one was kicking up dust as it trotted across the plains. Zebras may seem to stand out like a sore thumb to us, but their patterns actually blend in quite well to the predators that only see in patterns. They also make noise!
Zebras make a strange sound, similar to the “Arrf Arrf” of a dog bark. They are usually heard in the evenings as they call to each other to form large groups, as it is safer to be in a large group during the night when the large cats are on the prowl. They also have very weak backbones, and that is why, in nature videos, you often see them collapse when a lion grabs them on the back. Zebras collapse easily when attacked on their backbone.
Zebras are beautiful creatures and this one was gorgeous as moved across the empty vastness of Amboseli.

About Dani Blanchette
I am a freelance travel and music photographer and creator of GoingNomadic.com.
I love music, food, and exploring cities without guidebooks. I’ve flown a helicopter, hitchhiked down the east coast USA, and once snuck into the back of a zoo (in Serbia) and pet a lion.
I am always up for an adventure, and sometimes I videotape them.
